Last month, the 18-year-old country singer from Spruce Grove released his debut single, “Waiting Room.” Described as melancholy with a two-step twist, the song, as the title suggests, explores the feeling of waiting for something to happen in one’s life, but not knowing what exactly this something is.

“It’s that place between heaven and hell, purgatory. The song is about the place where dreamers and those who want more in life go to sit and long for something better. Taking that idea to country music, I really wanted something that folks would dance to. I love the way it turned out and can’t wait for more folks to hear it,” said Vallis.

The song is one of nearly 10 originals Vallis has written over the past couple of years. He said he chose to record “Waiting Room” as his debut single because it is a song which has received a lot of positive feedback during live performances. Two versions of the single were released — a four-minute studio edit and a three-minute radio edit.

Produced by Travis Switzer, the recordings feature a stacked roster of Canadian country talent including Robin Pelletier (acoustic guitar), Ryan Davidson (lead guitar), Mitch Jay (steel guitar), Switzer (bass), Chad Melchert (drums), and Stacy Lee Guse (backing vocals).

“To record my own song in a studio felt unreal and made me strive to continue to do music. The engineers, musicians, and my producer were awesome in every aspect. They were great critiques along with helpful teachers,” said Vallis.

Born in Bridgewater, N.S., Vallis moved out west to Spruce Grove with his parents seven years ago. A natural performer, he has been involved in the arts through choir, musical theatre, singing lessons, etc. for as long as he can remember.

In recent years, he found his true calling in country music. He said nothing can beat the genre’s storytelling qualities. Three of his biggest influences are Kentucky’s Tyler Childers, Oklahoma’s Zach Bryan, and Saskatchewan’s Colter Wall — all three of whom are more closely associated with the neotraditional, bluegrass, and folk elements of country music rather than pop.

“This song (Waiting Room) was one of the first pieces I wrote and finished and actually liked. There was a lot of second-guessing until I just started writing what I knew and what was true to me,” said Vallis.

This very sound is what helped Vallis catch the attention of DRC Music, a local entertainment agency. During last year’s Terry Fox Run in Spruce Grove, Jazz Matthews, the company’s founder, witnessed a solo performance by Vallis and was immediately drawn to his talent. After Vallis finished his set, Matthews offered him the opportunity to join the non-exclusive DRC Music roster right then are there.

“The hair on the back of my neck stood up as (Vallis) was doing soundcheck. He has a very unique storyteller sound you don’t see out there a lot. I just figured I had to do something when I heard him,” said Matthews.

To date, DRC Music manages Canadian Idol Season 5 alumni Jaydee Bixby; Stony Plain’s own country crooner, Steve Newsome; local country-pop band, Hometown Stereo; 2020 Country Music Association (CMA) Rising Star Award winner Krissy Feniak; husband and wife duo, The Rural Routes; multi-CMA nominee, Justin Hogg; folk/pop artist Of Candor; Justin Sutton & North of 49; and local one-man band, Bobblehead Joe.

This fall, Vallis moved to Vancouver, B.C., with his girlfriend to pursue a career in the arts. His next single, “Give Her the World” is scheduled for release in February 2023. In the meantime, he is working as a stone mason while continuing to write songs for an eventual EP.

“It feels great to finally get my music out and allow people to hear the final version of a song that has had so much time and effort put into it. I hope everyone enjoys “Waiting Room” and I can’t thank everyone enough for the support just from looking at the first couple weeks since the release. I want to bring music to people that can relate to and embrace it in the same way that I do,” said Vallis.
